24- Hour Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring

An ambulatory blood pressure monitor is a portable blood pressure monitor that automatically records your blood pressure every 30 to 60 minutes over 24 hours during your normal daily activities, including sleep.

The practice nurse will fit the monitor and explain the procedure. Patients who experience white coat hypertension ‘elevated BP in the presence of a doctor’ may be wrongly diagnosed with high BP. Multiple readings over a 24 hour reading are more reliable then a one off reading. A portable monitor is worn on a belt which is connected to a standard blood pressure cuff on the upper arm. On your second visit (the next day) the device is connected to the computer that generates a report of the time of day and average systolic and diastolic blood pressures.
